Middle-class pensioners could lose free bus pass
By Mike JonesPensioners could face being means tested for eligibility for free bus travel.
Free bus passes for over-60s were introduced in April last year.
But now a report for local government chiefs believes too many are taking the system for a ride - claiming it costs too much money and should be only for the poor.
According to the Daily Mail the report, commissioned and published by the Local Government Association, has been greeted by anger.
Andrew Harrop of Age Concern and Help the Aged said: "Many people will react with dismay. The scheme affords older people freedom and independence and makes a significant contribution towards reducing isolation and loneliness.
"Proposals to erode it simply because it is popular would be nothing short of perverse."
